Identity Theft: FAQ
- What will you do with my information?
Protect it! We will not do anything with your information other then that. That will completely be contradictory to our mission. We would never do anything illegal with your information, and we will never give it out to anyone else.
- How involved in the process should my credit report be?
You should always pay attention to your credit report. You need to make sure none of the errors and anything negative does not show up on your report. So you always need to be aware of your credit report. But you especially need to pay attention to it if you had your identity stolen. That is when the crucial part begins.
- Should I give out my social security number?
You should always be careful when you give your SSN out. Some places will require you to give it out, in order for you to have an ID number with them on file. But it is not something that you should throw around without caution. Some states are trying to put into law something stating you are not required to give out your SSN. But in the mean time you need to be overly protective of your social security number. It is very important.
- How can people get my information other then directly taking my credit cards, birth certificate and other important documents?
One of the major ways thieves can get your information is through your computer. All the information on your hard drive needs to remain secured at all times. If you are going to sell your hard drive, then get it throughly cleaned. You can erase everything, but there may still be things on there that you did not get to. So just make sure your laptop or PC is secured at all times.
- Can I get in trouble legally with my stolen information?
If illegal activity is done on your card, you will probably have to answer a lot of questions. That is just to prove and maintain your innocence while the police look into your stolen information. But don't worry, because you are innocent, and they will figure it out.
